↳ USER REPORT

Missing definitions, followed by a reported fix.

A user’s screenshot shows Siri unable to find definitions for common words. The author later reports that re-downloading dictionaries fixed the problem on their iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Siri says it cannot find definitions for “idiot” and “dumb” in the author’s screenshot. (opens in a new tab)

The record

u/CloakedCardinal reports that definition requests stopped producing useful answers. Their screenshot shows requests for “idiot” and “dumb” receiving messages that no definition could be found. In replies, the author identifies an iPhone 17 Pro Max and describes this as a newly encountered problem that became consistent. An edit to the post reports a resolution: changing selections under Settings → General → Dictionary and re-downloading the dictionary, while leaving at least one option selected. The author says definitions then worked again. Several commenters could not reproduce the problem. The reported fix is the author’s experience, not an independently tested remedy; the software build is not supplied.
